It was an average morning. The sun rose at 6:30 and I prepared
for school. Every day I drive to school with my best friend and ride the
bus home with her. We are extremely close and always will be. That
morning she texted me letting me know that she was coming to school late and
would explain later. I was confused, but let her have her space while I
pondered the possible reasons to why she was late. We ran into each other
at school and she was upset. She told me her mother went into the
hospital and was very ill. Her first symptom was a headache and the
doctors couldn’t figure out what was wrong. Her family was impatient and
worried, and so was mine. Her mom had been like a second mother to me.
Our houses are next to each other, so a day doesn’t go by where we don’t
interact in one way or another.
Soon after we talked, we found out that her mom was born with tangled
veins inside her brain. The migraine was caused by the growing veins,
which eventually exploded. She
needed several surgeries and tons of support.
This scenario is similar to Mrs. Joes in Great Expectations. She and Orlick were in the forge and
she became seriously injured. Pip
visited her in the hospital as she lay on her bed, which reminded me of my friend
and her mother. Pip asked Mrs. Joe
who was responsible for this crime and she couldn’t remember, nor communicate. This was similar to my friend’s mother
and her accident. After she was in
a coma and had some operations, she had to learn to do everything again. She had to learn to walk, drive, and
everything else in between. My
friend was extremely worried and greatly affected during these few months,
similar to Pip and his worries.
Although they may not always get along with one another, each child
still cares for their ‘parent’ and wishes for their best being as they go
through this traumatic experience.
